P.R.I.M.E. Leaders

P.R.I.M.E. Leaders (Productive, Resourceful, Innovative, Motivated & Empowered) is Inwood House’s afterschool program, funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) he program generally operates between the hours of 3 PM and 6 PM, from Monday through Friday. It serves over 400 youth in grades K – 8 at three New York City Department of Education schools in the South Bronx.

 Why It Exist

The hours between 3 PM and 6 PM have been identified as the “peak hours” when youth, across the nation, engage in risky and delinquent behaviors. The “3 PM to 6 PM issue” is further intensified in the South Bronx where a variety of social problems such as high rates of unemployment, obesity, STI infections, unplanned teenage pregnancies, drug use, violent crimes and low-performing schools exist. Adding to these problems is the fact that many schools in the South Bronx lack the resources to provide at-risk youth with comprehensive youth development programs that keep them off the streets after 3 PM. As a result, P.R.I.M.E. Leaders was developed under the Inwood House Mission to organize high-quality afterschool services that provide at-risk youth with safe and structured learning environments where they engage in productive activities under the supervision of positive adult role models.
